About East Oahu (Hawaii Kai, Portlock, Aina Haina, Wailupe)
East Oahu includes a series of upscale neighborhoods including Wailupe, Aina Haina, Hawaii Kai and Portlock, stretching from Diamond Head along the scenic Kalanianaole Highway to Koko Head Crater. It has a suburban feel and is away from the hustle and bustle of downtown Honolulu and Waikiki. Wailupe includes a handful of beachfront homes along the highway and homes within Wailupe Peninsula.
Wailupe Peninsula was developed as a man-made peninsula consisting of only three streets. Properties rarely come available in this small oceanfront community. Aina Haina Beach is a beachside neighborhood bordered by Wailupe and Kawaikui Beach Park. The beach is protected by an offshore reef, creating calm conditions for fishing and paddling. The Aina Haina Shopping center provides residents with convenient grocery shopping and dining options.
At the eastern end of Oahu, Hawaii Kai is home to several marina front homes with private boat docks. Portlock is Hawaii Kai’s premier oceanfront neighborhood, where the waterfront properties feature sunset ocean views towards Diamond Head. The neighborhood shopping centers offer major supermarkets and retailers, waterfront dining and a Costco Warehouse. Recreational opportunities include boating and watersports in Maunalua Bay, hiking up Koko Head, and snorkeling at Hanauma Bay.
